Apply for the Ula Cafe mural project
About the Project
We're commissioning an original mural for the front area of our cafe, and we're opening the call to our community to help us create it.
We want to see Jamaica Plain reflected back at us: its textures, its people, its history, its joy. Think of it as a welcome to the neighborhood, to our café, and to everyone who walks through our door.
Beyond that, the canvas is yours. Some questions to spark your thinking:
What does community look like to you?
What do you see when you walk through JP?
What do you want the next generation to see when they walk through our doors?
All styles and experience levels are welcome.
Project Scope + Details
Primary wall: 11 feet wide × 7 feet tall
Optional: an adjoining wall, slightly smaller, with a door in the middle. Your mural can spill onto this wall and even cover the door if your concept calls for it.
Surface: beadboard interior wall. Ula handles surface prep.
Payment
$2,000 flat commission to the winning artist, plus all materials covered by Ula.
$125 honorarium to each of the three finalists, for developing a preliminary sketch.
The wall is an 11×7 paintable space in our front seating area with the possibility of extending into the left corner
How it works
Submit your proposal by September 1, 2026.
We’ll select three finalists by September 8 and pay each a $125 honorarium to develop a sketch, due September 22.
The winning artist is selected by October 1 and painting should begin by October 15, 2026.
