Community & Marketing Coordinator
Part-time, hourly · 10 hrs/week · Jamaica Plain, Boston · $25/hr
About Ula
Ula Cafe has been a cornerstone of Jamaica Plain for over a decade — a place where neighbors gather, artists show their work, and the community feels genuinely at home. We're a small, independently owned cafe with a big sense of place. We believe deeply in our neighborhood, in supporting local artists, and in creating a space where everyone belongs. We're looking for someone who gets that, and wants to help us tell that story.
The Role
This is a newly created position for someone who is rooted in JP, cares about community, and has the skills to help us show up better online, in people's inboxes, at events, and on our walls. You'll report directly to owner Beth Santos.
What You'll Do
Social Media
Create and schedule content for Instagram and Facebook that feels genuine to who we are — warm, local, community-rooted
Capture content in the cafe (with your phone is totally fine) and occasionally coordinate with local photographers or creators
Engage with our followers, respond to comments and DMs, and help build our online community
Track basic performance and share what's working
Email Marketing
Write and send a regular email newsletter to our list (think: seasonal specials, upcoming events, artist spotlights, cafe news)
Help grow and maintain our email list
Keep emails feeling like they came from a neighbor, not a corporation
Event Coordination
Help plan and promote community events at Ula — from open mics to pop-ups to neighborhood gatherings
Manage logistics, vendor or partner communication, and day-of coordination as needed
Promote events across our social and email channels
Be present at events when possible (some evenings/weekends may be required)
Gallery Wall Program
Curate and manage our rotating gallery wall, featuring local artists
Build relationships with JP artists and handle the logistics of each show (artist outreach, install, takedown, promotion)
Write short artist bios and spotlights for our channels
Help us make our walls a genuine platform for local creative voices
Ad-Hoc Projects
Our annual holiday pop-up and other seasonal programming
Collaborations with neighborhood businesses, artists, and organizations
Special campaigns, community partnerships, or one-off projects as they come up
Whatever else needs doing — this is a small team and we all wear multiple hats
Who We're Looking For
Based in Jamaica Plain or the immediate surrounding area — this neighborhood matters to you
Have a genuine understanding of social media strategy and marketing — not just posting, but thinking about why and for whom
Experience with social media content creation (especially Instagram) and email marketing
Strong writer with a warm, conversational voice
An eye for design (both digital and IRL) and can use Canva confidently to create polished, on-brand materials
Fluent in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar)
Strong self-manager — you can set your own priorities, meet deadlines, and don't need a lot of hand-holding to get things done
You care about community, local artists, and independent businesses
Comfortable working in a small, scrappy environment where things move fast
Experience with event coordination, community organizing, or the arts is a big plus. A skill set that’s not just creative, but operationally tight, highly communicative, and able to get everyone in line :)
